Live music, folklórico and Aztec dance, a giant puppet parade, and local artists fill Heritage Park in Historic Downtown Denison for the festival’s 15th year
DENISON, TX, UNITED STATES, October 22, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Denison Arts Council will present its 15th annual Día de los Muertos Festival on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Heritage Park in Historic Downtown Denison. The free, family-friendly celebration honors the Mexican tradition of remembering loved ones who have passed, with a full day of music, dance, art, and a parade through the heart of the Denison Cultural Arts District.
This year’s festival takes its theme from the quinceañera, the celebration that marks a young woman’s 15th birthday and her passage into adulthood. Turning 15 is a milestone in Mexican culture, and the theme reflects the festival’s own milestone: 15 years of bringing Día de los Muertos to North Texas.
“Fifteen years ago, this festival started as a way to share a beautiful tradition with our community,” said Nanci Decker, Executive Director of the Denison Arts Council. “It has grown into one of the most meaningful days of the year in Downtown Denison. A quinceañera is about family, heritage, and celebrating who you are becoming, and that is exactly what this festival has become for us.”
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, traces its roots to the Aztec, Maya, Toltec, and Nahua peoples, who saw death as a continuation of life rather than an end. Today it is recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Far from somber, the holiday is a joyful reunion, filled with marigolds, sugar skulls, papel picado, and ofrendas (altars) built to welcome the spirits of family members home for a brief visit.
The Denison Arts Council created the festival to offer accessible education about the holiday and the country where it began, to give a platform to artists and performers of Mexican heritage, and to create a welcoming space for everyone who visits Downtown Denison.
Festival goers can expect live performances on the main stage, including mariachi, folklórico, Aztec and Mayan dance, and a closing concert. Vendor booths will offer original art and holiday-inspired goods. At 2 p.m., the Día de los Muertos parade will make its way through downtown, led by towering handmade puppets, followed by a costume contest. Catrinas, calaveras, and festive attire are encouraged.
